Official Game Rules

1. Game Overview

Van 4×4 is an elimination card game where players compete to avoid being the last person holding cards. There is only one loser—the final player left with cards in their hand.

• Goal: Empty your hand before others and avoid elimination
• Game Type: Elimination-style card game
• End Condition: Game ends when only one player has cards remaining
• Result: The last player with cards is the loser; all others avoided elimination

2. Players & Setup

• 2 or more players
• Standard 54-card deck (52 cards + Black Joker + Red Joker)
• Cards dealt clockwise, starting with the dealer

3. Dealer Selection

• First round: Each player is dealt one card; highest card is dealer
• Next rounds: Previous round's loser is the dealer
• Card ranking (low to high): 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, 2, 3, Black Joker, Red Joker

4. Dealing & Starting the Game

• Dealer shuffles and deals all cards
• First player is the one holding “Spades 4” (must reveal, not play)
• If Spades 4 is missing, escalate to Spades 5, then 6, etc.

5. Objective

• Be the first to empty your hand
• Players go out one by one as they empty their hands
• Round ends when only one player remains with cards (the loser)

6. Legal Combos

Combo Type	Description
Single	One card. Jokers rank highest.
Pair	Two cards of the same rank.
Troyka	Three cards of the same rank.
Quads	Four cards of the same rank.
Katarik	Straight of 4+ consecutive cards (no 2s, 3s, or Jokers).
Za	Special straight: 11-card run from 4 to Ace.
Bomb	6+ cards of consecutive pairs (no Jokers).

7. Combo Power Hierarchy

Combo	Can Beat
Single	Lower single
Pair	Lower pair
Katarik	Lower Katarik (same length only)
Troyka	Single, Pair, Katarik, Black Joker, lower Troyka
Quads	All above, Za, Bomb, Red Joker, lower Quads
Bomb	Lower Bombs (same length only)

• Troyka and Quads are power combos.
• Jokers cannot be used in combos; always played as singles.

8. Turn Rules

• On your turn, play a valid combo that beats the current one or pass.

9. Taking the Next Move & Wind Blow

• If all pass and last player who played still has cards, table clears and they start next trick.
• If all pass and last player is out of cards, next player clockwise starts ("wind blow").

10. Pass Rules

• Pass only once per combo on table.
• Once you pass, you cannot play until a new combo is played.
• Cannot pass if you were last to play and all others passed (table clears).

11. End of Game

• Round ends when only one player has cards (the loser).
• No winners—just one loser each round.
